After much hearty discussion with family and friends about my recently-expressed preference for fiction, I started reflecting on the non-fiction works that I have enjoyed...here are just a few:
No Ordinary Time (Doris Kearns Goodwin)
Among Schoolchildren (Tracey Kidder)
Dead Man Walking (Sr. Helen Prejean)
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down (Ann Fadiman)
**this also happens to be one of my favorite books
Breach of Faith (Jed Horne)
**Horne is an award-winning journalist who writes for the Times-Picayune. His writing is clear and compelling. This book broke my heart and confirmed my outrage - it chronicles the day of and days following Hurricane Katrina. Most of you already know that I have passionate opinions on the breach of the levies and the reprehensible way that our government responded, not to mention immense respect for the people of New Orleans and surrounding communities who survived and are working hard to rebuild. If you want to read something that will help you understand New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina, this book is the place to start.
